Hang & Trail

Serious cavers and slow travelers

7 days in Phong Nha

Seven days is luxury. You get a multi-cave expedition (Hung Thoong or Tu Lan four-day), plus the tourist caves, the countryside, the food and time to actually slow down. The trip cave lovers come back from talking about for years.

Days 1 to 2: Settle and the easy caves

  • Day 1: arrive, Phong Nha Cave by boat, dinner in town.
  • Day 2: Paradise Cave morning, Dark Cave afternoon.

Days 3 to 5: Multi-day expedition

  • Hung Thoong (3-day Jungle Boss), Tu Lan 4-day (Oxalis), or Hang Va + Nuoc Nut (Oxalis).
  • Two or three nights in the jungle and caves. Bring a head torch and quick-dry clothes.

Day 6: Recovery and valley

  • Late breakfast, Bong Lai valley loop by bike, long lunch and a swim at Wild Boar Eco Farm.

Day 7: Mellow, travel

  • Morning at Mooc Spring or the Botanic Garden, afternoon onward.

Common questions

Is 7 days in Phong Nha actually worth it?

If you came for the caves, yes, easily. A multi-day expedition (Hung Thoong, Tu Lan 4-day, or Hang Va plus Nuoc Nut) is a different category of trip to the day caves, and you need the buffer days on either side. If you're not doing a multi-day expedition, 7 days is too long, redirect 3 of those days to Hoi An or Ninh Binh.

Hung Thoong, Tu Lan 4-day or Hang Va. Which expedition?

Hung Thoong with Jungle Boss is 3 days, 2 nights, $475 (12,100,000 VND, prices checked June 2026), six caves and a beautiful jungle campsite, and the best value of the three. Tu Lan 4-day with Oxalis is $695 (17,700,000 VND), more swimming, a wilder region. Hang Va with Oxalis is $345 for 2 days and is the technical pick: rope work, calcite gours, smaller groups. Hung Thoong is our default recommendation.

What if Son Doong is sold out for my dates?

Welcome to most of the year. Hang Va plus Nuoc Nut (Oxalis, 2 days) is the closest substitute on the technical side. Hung Thoong (Jungle Boss, 3 days) gives you the multi-cave jungle experience for a fraction of the price. Hang En (Oxalis, 2 days) gives you the Son Doong-style chamber and campsite. Any of the three fits inside the 7-day plan.

How do I avoid getting wrecked by back-to-back caves?

Build in the recovery day. Day 6 in this plan exists for a reason: the Bong Lai loop, a swim at the Wild Boar Eco Farm, a long lunch. After 3 days of jungle camping, your knees will thank you. Don't try to add another cave on Day 6, you'll hate the last day of your trip.
