What to eat in Phong Nha

Phong Nha sits in Quang Binh province, central Vietnam, which has its own quiet food tradition. Pair the local specialties with the Bong Lai valley farm scene and you have one of the best-eating small towns on the coast. Here's what to order and where.

What to order

Chao canh

The Quang Binh signature. A thick, chewy noodle soup with shrimp and pork, eaten breakfast through lunch. Hot, slurpy, satisfying. Try it at the small spots on the main strip in Son Trach.

around 40,000 VND ($1.50)

Banh loc

Translucent tapioca dumplings filled with shrimp and pork, steamed in banana leaves. A central Vietnamese street snack, perfect with the dipping sauce. Sold from baskets and small carts.

around 5,000 VND each

Banh khoai / Banh xeo

The famous central Vietnamese yellow pancake, crispy outside, filled with shrimp and bean sprouts. You wrap it in lettuce and herbs with rice paper and dip it in peanut sauce. Pure joy.

around 40,000 to 60,000 VND

Wild boar (lon rung)

Grilled or in a stew, eaten at the Wild Boar Eco Farm or several Bong Lai spots. Stronger and gamier than pork, with proper bite.

around 200,000 to 300,000 VND per dish

Grilled river fish

Fresh from the Son River, often grilled whole over coals with lemongrass. Best at the riverside spots and farmstays.

around 150,000 to 250,000 VND

Country chicken (ga doi)

Free-range chicken, slow-grilled. The Pub With Cold Beer chicken in Bong Lai is the famous version. Eat with peanuts, rice paper and herbs.

Banh canh and bun bo Hue

Worth trying. Bun bo is the spicy beef noodle from Hue, easy to find here too. Banh canh is a thicker rice-flour noodle in a clear broth.

Vietnamese egg coffee (ca phe trung)

A creamy egg-yolk foam over strong Vietnamese coffee. The town has a couple of cafes that do it well. Sweet, dessert-like, addictive.

A word on the Bong Lai loop

The valley restaurants are an experience, not just a meal. You rent a motorbike or bike, ride between three or four farms, eat a small dish at each, swim somewhere in between, and end up back in town full and happy. It's the cheapest, best-feeling day in Phong Nha. Don't try to eat at all of them in one day, pick two and breathe.
