What to pack for Phong Nha
The packing list nobody writes well, because most are written by people who never went. Phong Nha is wet, muddy, hot, occasionally cool, and you'll be in and out of water. Here's what actually helps, and what to leave at home.
Clothing (the right stuff)
- ✓Two quick-dry t-shirts (synthetic or merino, not cotton).
- ✓Quick-dry trousers or shorts for trekking days.
- ✓A long-sleeve shirt for sun, leeches and cool cave camps.
- ✓Dark swimwear (mud and limestone water both stain).
- ✓Light rain shell (April to October especially).
- ✓A warm layer for sleeping in caves, the camps get cool.
- ✓Sun hat and a buff or bandana for dust on the motorbike.
Footwear
- ✓Trail-running shoes or sturdy sandals you can soak.
- ✓Flip-flops or sliders for camp and town evenings.
- ✓Wool or synthetic hiking socks, two pairs. Cotton causes blisters when wet.
- ✓Skip heavy hiking boots, they take forever to dry.
Gear and gadgets
- ✓Head torch with spare batteries, red-light mode is a plus.
- ✓Small dry bag, 5 to 10 litres, for phone and a dry layer.
- ✓Reef-safe sunscreen and DEET-free insect repellent.
- ✓Refillable water bottle (1L+).
- ✓Power bank for the long sleeper bus and the camps.
- ✓Universal adapter (Vietnam uses Type A, C and F).
- ✓Camera in a dry bag, lens cloths (cave humidity fogs lenses).
First aid and medical
- ✓Plasters and a small roll of athletic tape for blisters.
- ✓Anti-diarrhoea tablets, electrolyte sachets.
- ✓Antihistamines (a few bites are normal).
- ✓Any prescription meds in original packaging.
- ✓Tiger Balm or similar for insect bites.
Documents and money
- ✓Passport with e-visa, and a colour photocopy.
- ✓Travel insurance details (with cave-trekking cover, see our notes).
- ✓Vietnamese dong cash, ATMs are limited in Son Trach.
- ✓Credit card (used in town for booking, not in the valley).
For the expedition caves (Son Doong, Hang En, Pygmy, Va, Tu Lan)
- ✓Most gear is provided: helmet, headlamp, harness, life jacket, wetsuit, sleeping kit.
- ✓Bring your own quick-dry clothes for several days.
- ✓Bring your own underwear and socks, not provided.
- ✓A small soft toy or a luxury snack for the second night, it makes a real difference.
The bits people get wrong
Hiking boots. Leave them. They will be soaked on day one of any expedition cave and won't dry for the rest of your trip. Trail shoes or sport sandals are what every guide actually wears.
White or light swimwear at Dark Cave. The mineral mud stains it permanently brown. Dark colours only.
Too much cotton. Quick-dry synthetic or merino across the board. Cotton stays heavy and clammy for days in this humidity.
No insect repellent. The valley has mosquitoes at dusk and the jungle has both bugs and the odd leech. A small bottle saves misery.
Common questions
What should you wear for a Phong Nha cave tour?
Quick-dry clothing (not cotton), trekking sandals or trail shoes you don't mind soaking, dark swimwear under, and a head torch even if the tour provides one. Long sleeves and trousers help against leeches on jungle trips.
Do you need hiking boots for Phong Nha?
For the tourist caves and the valley, no, runners are fine. For the expedition caves, the operators provide trekking-style sandals or you can bring trail-running shoes. Heavy hiking boots are overkill and a pain to dry.
What's the one thing most people forget for Phong Nha?
A small dry bag. The river crossings, swims and cave humidity will reach anything in your pack, and you'll want a phone and a few dry layers protected. A 5 to 10 litre roll-top is enough.
Do you need to bring a head torch?
The tours include one, but bring your own as a backup, ideally with a red-light mode. A failing head torch on a 2-day cave trip is grim.
Got your kit? Next, see when to come, how much it costs, the caves themselves.
