Common questions

What does a day in Phong Nha actually cost by travel style?

Backpackers run about $25 to $40 per day (635,000 to 1,015,000 VND) covering a hostel dorm, street food, a cheap cave entry and a beer or three. Mid-range sits around $70 to $120 per day (1,775,000 to 3,045,000 VND) with a private farmstay room, a day tour and decent meals. Splurge travelers on a multi-day Jungle Boss or Oxalis expedition will burn $250 to $500 per day (6,350,000 to 12,700,000 VND) all-in. Prices checked June 2026.

Which caves give you the most bang for your buck and which are skippable on a tight budget?

Paradise Cave at around $10 (255,000 VND) and Phong Nha Cave boat trip at about $6 (152,000 VND) plus the shared boat fee are the cheap headliners and genuinely worth it. Dark Cave is fun but feels overpriced at $19 (480,000 VND) once you add the zipline, and Tien Son is a tack-on most people skip. If you can only splash out once, put the money into a Jungle Boss day trip to Hang Tien or Hang Va instead of stacking the cheap caves. Prices checked June 2026.

How do I keep accommodation costs down without ending up in a dump?

Easy Tiger and Central Backpackers run clean dorms in town from about $7 to $10 (180,000 to 255,000 VND) including a passable breakfast. For private rooms, message family-run guesthouses in Son Trach directly on Booking or Facebook to dodge the OTA markup, you can usually land a fan room for $15 (380,000 VND). Avoid showing up in July or August without a reservation, that is when prices jump 30 to 50 percent. Prices checked June 2026.

Are organized tours worth the markup, or should I just DIY on a scooter?

For Paradise Cave, Bong Lai valley and the Phong Nha Cave boat, DIY on a $7 (180,000 VND) scooter rental is honestly the better trip and saves you 60 percent. For anything involving ropes, river crossings or multi-day jungle, pay the operator, Jungle Boss and Oxalis are the only crews you should trust with abseils and swims. Skip the cheap $25 (635,000 VND) group day tours from Hue and Hoi An, you spend the day on a bus and see almost nothing. Prices checked June 2026.

What is the ATM and card situation, and how much cash should I bring?

There are working ATMs in Son Trach town (Agribank and BIDV) but they cap withdrawals at 3,000,000 VND (about $118) per pull and charge 55,000 VND fees. Most hostels, established restaurants and tour operators take card or bank transfer, but homestays, Bong Lai farms and scooter rentals are cash only. Pull a couple of million dong on arrival and you will not need to think about it again. Prices checked June 2026.

Do I need to tip guides and porters, and how much is normal?

Tipping is not built into Vietnamese culture but it is genuinely expected on multi-day cave expeditions where porters carry your gear through rivers and jungle. Budget about 200,000 to 400,000 VND ($8 to $16) per porter per day and 300,000 to 500,000 VND ($12 to $20) per guide per day on Oxalis and Jungle Boss trips. On day tours and boat trips, a 50,000 VND tip is appreciated but not required. Prices checked June 2026.
