Da Nang, route to Phong Nha

Da Nang to Phong Nha

A longer leg, usually done by sleeper bus or train via Dong Hoi.

The short answer

Sleeper bus (7 to 8 hours) or the train to Dong Hoi plus a short transfer.

One thing that trips everyone up: Dong Hoi is not Phong Nha. Dong Hoi is the gateway city with the airport and train station. Phong Nha town is officially Son Trach village, about 45km further on. When you book transport, your real destination is Son Trach / Phong Nha.

Phong Nha to Da Nang is the same in reverse, often onward to Hoi An.

The short version

Da Nang to Phong Nha is a long leg, about 312km, and there's no quick way to skip it. Most people take a sleeper bus, seven to eight hours, around $11 to $22 (prices checked June 2026). The other good option is the train up to Dong Hoi, five to six hours, then a short transfer the last 45km into Phong Nha town. A private car splits the difference at five to six hours door to door, from about $140. Don't bother looking for a flight, there isn't a useful one. And if you're starting in Hoi An, add roughly 30 to 45 minutes at the front.

One thing to get straight before you book anything: the train and most maps will point you at Dong Hoi, but Dong Hoi is the gateway city, not the caves. Phong Nha town is a separate place called Son Trach, about 45km inland. More on that below.

By sleeper bus

This is what most travelers do, and it's the cheapest way that lands you right in Phong Nha town with no transfer to sort out. Expect seven to eight hours and around $11 to $22 depending on the operator and how new the cabin is (checked June 2026). Names you'll see booking online include Queen Cafe, Duc Duong, Techbus and a handful of limousine-van outfits.

Buses run through the day, not just overnight. There are mid-morning and lunchtime departures that get you in by late afternoon or evening, plus later services. A daytime bus means you actually see the coast and the countryside go by, which I'd take over an overnight on this particular route, the distance isn't quite long enough to make sleeping through it worth losing the views. Whichever you pick, bring earplugs and treat the advertised WiFi and onboard toilet as optimistic. Turn up at least 30 minutes before departure, because pickup points in Da Nang vary by company and they don't wait around.

By train, and the Hai Van Pass

The train is the scenic choice, and the reason is the first hour or so out of Da Nang. The line climbs the Hai Van Pass, hugging the cliffs above the sea, and it's genuinely one of the best stretches of railway in the country. You get it right at the start of this journey, which is a nice way to begin a long travel day. Sit on the left-hand side leaving Da Nang for the water views.

The catch is the same one everyone hits: the train does not go to Phong Nha. It runs Da Nang to Dong Hoi in roughly five to six hours, and a regular soft seat or sleeper berth runs about $7 to $20 (checked June 2026). The tourist trains like Violette or Livitrans are comfier and cost a lot more, $40 and up. From Dong Hoi station you've still got the last 45km to cover, which takes 45 minutes to an hour. So the train is slower overall than the bus once you add the transfer, but more comfortable and far prettier.

The Dong Hoi to Phong Nha transfer

Whether you arrive in Dong Hoi by train, you'll need to cover the last 45km to Son Trach yourself. Two ways to do it. The local bus, usually the B4, leaves roughly hourly from near the station and costs about $2, taking an hour to an hour and a half and dropping you in the middle of Phong Nha town. It's cheap and perfectly fine in daylight.

The other option is a taxi or pre-booked transfer, around $16 to $24 for the car, 45 minutes to an hour (checked June 2026). If you're arriving late, tired, or in a group, just take the car. Plenty of Phong Nha guesthouses will arrange a pickup from Dong Hoi station if you message them ahead, which saves the haggling.

By private car

From about $140 for the whole car, five to six hours, door to door with no changes (checked June 2026). For two or more people splitting it, this starts to make real sense, and it's the most comfortable way short of flying, which isn't an option here anyway. You can ask the driver to stop wherever you like along the way, and you skip both the Dong Hoi transfer and the turn-up-early bus scramble. If you're carrying a lot of luggage or travelling with kids, this is the one I'd book.

What about flying?

Short answer: don't. There's no direct flight from Da Nang to Dong Hoi. The only air routes connect through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, which means flying the wrong way down the country and back, three or four hours minimum in the air plus airport time, for a hop you can do overland in five to eight. It costs far more and saves you nothing. Ignore any flight search that suggests otherwise. On this route the ground options win outright.

Starting from Hoi An

Plenty of people on this route are really coming from Hoi An, since it's where most travelers base themselves rather than Da Nang city. The good news is it barely changes anything. Hoi An sits about 30km south of Da Nang, so add roughly 30 to 45 minutes at the start. Several sleeper buses pick up directly in Hoi An, so you don't even have to get yourself to Da Nang first. If you're going by train, you'll need a quick taxi or Grab up to Da Nang station to start, since Hoi An has no station of its own.

Which one to pick

If you want it simple and cheap and you'd rather not deal with a transfer, take a daytime sleeper bus straight through, it drops you in Son Trach and you watch the coast on the way. If comfort and scenery matter more than the clock, take the train for the Hai Van Pass and budget the extra hour from Dong Hoi at the end. And if there are a few of you, or you just want to be left alone with your own driver and stops on demand, the private car is worth the $140. What I wouldn't do is fly, or take an overnight bus on a leg this length when a daytime one shows you more for the same money.

Common questions

How do you get from Da Nang to Phong Nha?

Most people take a sleeper bus, 7 to 8 hours, or the train to Dong Hoi plus a short transfer. A private car takes 5 to 6 hours.

Is the Da Nang to Phong Nha sleeper bus safe overnight?

Yes, it's a well-trodden tourist route with operators like Queen Cafe and Hung Thanh running it nightly. Buses are reasonably comfortable with reclining pods, bring earplugs, a light layer for aircon and an eye mask. Keep valuables on your body, not in the overhead net.

Can you take the train from Da Nang straight to Phong Nha?

No, trains terminate at Dong Hoi, 45km from Phong Nha. From there grab a taxi or the local B4 bus the rest of the way. The Hai Van Pass section in the first hour is the prettiest stretch of rail in Vietnam, worth a daytime departure if possible.

How early do you need to book Da Nang to Phong Nha?

In high season (June to August, and around Tet) book 2 to 3 days ahead. The rest of the year, day-before is usually fine on 12Go or Vexere. Walk-on is possible but you risk the top bunks at the back, which are the bumpiest.
