Vietnam visa for Phong Nha

There's no separate Phong Nha visa, just the regular Vietnam one. For most travelers that means a $25 e-visa applied online before you fly. Citizens of 25 or so countries can enter visa-free for up to 45 days. Here's the honest version.

The Vietnam e-visa (90 days)

The Vietnam e-visa is the easiest option for almost everyone. Valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, costs $25 or $50. Apply at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, the official portal. Avoid third-party sites that charge extra.

You'll need a passport scan, a digital photo and a credit card. Processing takes around three working days. Print your e-visa or save the PDF, you'll show it at immigration on arrival.

It works at every land border, port and airport in Vietnam, including Dong Hoi (the airport closest to Phong Nha).

Visa exemption (45 days, selected countries)

Since 2023, Vietnam extended visa-free entry to 45 days for citizens of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Belarus and a few others. You can enter visa-free for any purpose (tourism, transit, business).

This covers a normal Phong Nha trip with room to spare. If you'll stay longer, get the e-visa instead.

ASEAN citizens get 30 days visa-free, with some countries getting longer.

Visa on arrival

Visa on arrival exists but requires a pre-arranged approval letter from a Vietnamese agency, and only works at major international airports. It's no longer recommended for most travelers. The e-visa is simpler and cheaper.

Passport rules

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your entry date and have at least two blank pages. Border officers check this strictly.

At Dong Hoi airport

Dong Hoi is Vietnam's smallest international-feeling airport, but it does accept e-visa entries on international flights (rare, mostly via Bangkok). Most travelers fly in via Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City and connect to Dong Hoi on a domestic flight, where the visa is already stamped.
