Day trippers from Hue or a tight schedule
1 day in Phong Nha
One day is short for Phong Nha and you'll wish you had more. But if it's all you have, here's the day that packs in the most without rushing you into a blur. Best done as an overnight from Hue with an early start.
Morning
- Be at Paradise Cave for 8am opening. You'll have the boardwalk almost to yourself for an hour.
- Drive back via the Phong Nha valley to the boat station in Son Trach.
Lunch
- Quick lunch in town, on the main strip. Twenty minutes, not two hours.
Afternoon
- Phong Nha Cave by boat. The afternoon boats run until around 3pm. Skip the optional second cave at the back so you make the return.
- If you'd rather, swap the boat cave for Dark Cave's zipline and mud bath, more fun, less culture.
Evening
- Travel back. If you're staying overnight, add a sunset beer on the river before dinner.

Common questions
Is 1 day in Phong Nha enough?
Honestly, no. One day lets you see Paradise Cave and either Phong Nha Cave or Dark Cave, and that's it. You'll miss the countryside, the food and the slower river evenings that make people fall for this place. If you can possibly stretch it to two nights, do.
Can I really day-trip from Hue and see anything?
You can, but you'll spend roughly 4 hours each way on the road and arrive at Paradise Cave around 10am, after the first tour buses. A 1-night overnight from Hue works far better: leave Hue at dawn, sleep in Son Trach, drive back the next afternoon. A pure day trip from Hue is the worst version of Phong Nha.
What does a 1-day plan actually cost?
Budget around $40 to $70 (1,000,000 to 1,800,000 VND, prices checked June 2026) per person if you self-drive. Paradise Cave entry is 250,000 VND, the Phong Nha Cave boat is 550,000 VND split between up to 12 people, and Dark Cave runs 450,000 VND. Add a scooter rent at 150,000 VND, lunch, fuel and you're there. A guided day tour from town runs $35 to $55 (900,000 to 1,400,000 VND).
Should I do Phong Nha Cave or Dark Cave with one day?
If it's your first time in a cave, do Phong Nha Cave: a wooden boat into the limestone is the postcard experience. If you've already done a few caves elsewhere or you're travelling with restless people, swap in Dark Cave's zipline, kayak and mud bath, which is more fun than scenic.
