Getting around Phong Nha
Once you've arrived in Son Trach, the caves and the valley are spread across 20 to 70km. You'll need wheels of some kind. Here's every option, what it actually costs, and which one suits which kind of trip.
Motorbike rental
around 150,000 VND ($6) per day
Pros: Total freedom. You can do the cave loop, the Ho Chi Minh Trail, the valley, sunset spots, all on your own time.
Cons: You need to be confident on a bike. Petrol is extra (around 30,000 VND tops it up). You're meant to have an international permit.
Where: Easy Tiger, Phong Nha Backpackers, almost every hostel and farmstay. Newer bikes from Phong Nha Riders.
Bicycle rental
around 60,000 to 100,000 VND ($3 to $4) per day
Pros: Perfect for the Bong Lai valley loop. Quiet, healthy, lets you stop anywhere. No license needed.
Cons: The caves are 20 to 70km apart, far for a bike. Best as a half-day to the valley.
Where: Most accommodations have them. Chay Lap Farmstay does a great quality fleet.
Private car with driver
around 800,000 to 1,500,000 VND ($30 to $60) per day
Pros: Air-con, no driving stress, good for families or older travelers. Drivers often act as informal guides.
Cons: Less flexible than a bike, more expensive than a motorbike.

Cons: Drivers don't always speak English. Outside town and the valley, hard to flag.
Where: Phong Nha town main strip, and through your hotel reception.
Tour bus / shared transfer
included with tour, or 100,000 to 200,000 VND shared
Pros: Included in most cave tours. Easy hop-on-hop-off for the Paradise + Dark Cave combo.
Cons: You're on someone else's schedule.
Where: Most cave operators include transfers. Easy Tiger runs daily shared trips.
Grab
n/a
Pros: Works in Dong Hoi airport, useful for the transfer.
Cons: Does not work properly in Son Trach itself. Few drivers, no reliable coverage.
Where: Don't rely on Grab in Phong Nha. Book transfers ahead.
A note on the motorbike
A lot of travelers who say "I'd never ride a motorbike" rent one in Phong Nha and love it. The roads are quiet, the scenery is huge, and the freedom turns a sightseeing trip into something more like an adventure. If you can ride a bicycle and a scooter, you can ride a 110cc semi-automatic here.
Two real safety notes. First, stay on the roads. The jungle off either side still has unexploded ordnance from the war, and that is not a hypothetical risk. Second, wear shoes and helmets, ride sober and don't ride at night outside town.
Common questions
How do you get around Phong Nha once you're there?
Motorbike (around 150,000 VND a day) is the most popular and gives the most freedom. Bicycle (60,000 to 100,000 VND) works for the valley. Private car with driver runs around 800,000 to 1,500,000 VND for a full day. Grab does not work properly, taxis can be flagged in town.
Is it safe to rent a motorbike in Phong Nha?
The roads are quiet and in decent condition, so it's safer than Hanoi or Saigon. But traffic is unpredictable, helmets are essential and you're legally meant to have a valid international permit. Wear shoes, not flip-flops, and avoid night riding outside town.
Can you visit the caves without a motorbike?
Yes. Most accommodations arrange shared minivans or private cars to the cave gates. Tour operators include transport in their day trips. A motorbike just gives you more flexibility and turns the journey into part of the fun.
