Want a day in a real cave without a 5-day expedition
4 days in Phong Nha
Four days is the sweet spot if you want one proper guided cave adventure plus the easy caves and the countryside. You're not committing to a five day expedition, but you do get a real day off the tourist trail.

- Evening: a real dinner back in the valley.

Common questions
Which guided cave should I pick on Day 3?
Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley with Jungle Boss is the best all-rounder: jungle trek, swim-through cave, lunch in the forest, around $80 to $95 (2,000,000 to 2,400,000 VND, prices checked June 2026). The Tu Lan one-day swim trip is more cave-water and runs through Oxalis. Tra Ang is the wettest, you swim into the cave through a sump, and is unbeatable in May to August.
Is 4 days too much if I'm not really into caves?
No, because Day 3 doesn't have to be a cave. Swap the guided cave for a full-day Bong Lai loop with the Wild Boar Eco Farm and Mooc Spring, or a half-day cycle on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and an afternoon at Chay Lap jungle trail. Four days gives you space the 2 and 3-day plans don't.
Should I do a 4-day plan or stretch to 5 for a cave camp?
If a night sleeping in a cave is on your list, the answer is 5 days, full stop. The 4-day plan is built around day adventures, no overnight underground. Hang Pygmy and Hang En are 2-day, 1-night expeditions and need a 5-day visit minimum to fit comfortably with the easy caves.
How early do I need to book the Day 3 guided cave?
For Jungle Boss day treks (Elephant, Hung Thoong day trip) two to four weeks ahead in the dry season is usually fine. For Tu Lan day trips with Oxalis, book six to eight weeks ahead in peak season (March to August). Tra Ang sells out fast in summer because the cave-swim is the headline experience for the wet months.
