Is Son Doong worth the multi-day commitment?
For most people who go, yes, it's a highlight of their life. But it's sold out for years and physically demanding. Hang Pygmy or Kong Collapse are bookable alternatives with similar scale.
How far ahead do you need to book Son Doong?
Son Doong is sold out roughly 18 to 24 months in advance via Oxalis (the only operator). The waitlist opens once a year. The Kong Collapse 5-day is usually bookable 3 to 6 months out, sometimes sooner in shoulder season.
What happens if a multi-day expedition gets cancelled by weather?
Cave expeditions can be cut short or rerouted if river levels spike, mostly in Oct-Nov. Reputable operators offer a free reschedule or partial refund for weather cancellations on their end. Travel insurance with adventure cover handles the rest, including your flights.
