Common questions
Hang Pygmy or Hang En for the overnight?
Hang En is the famous one, the Son Doong sister cave, with the beach campsite and the river entrance you've seen on Instagram. It's $345 with Oxalis (8,800,000 VND, prices checked June 2026) and books out 3 to 6 months ahead. Hang Pygmy with Jungle Boss is $325 (8,300,000 VND), slightly tougher physically, less crowded, and bookable closer to the date. Both are extraordinary. We slightly favour Hang Pygmy for honest value and quieter camp.
Should I add Son Doong instead?
Son Doong is a 4-day, 3-night expedition costing $3,000 (76,000,000 VND, prices checked June 2026), only sold by Oxalis, and the season runs January to August. If you have the budget and the dates, it replaces the whole 5-day plan, you'd want 7 days total. If you can't get a permit, Hang En is the closest experience, and Hang Pygmy is the best value alternative.
How fit do I need to be for the overnight cave expedition?
Hang En is moderate: 10km in, river crossings, one steep descent. Hang Pygmy is harder: 13km, ropes, a longer climb out. If you can comfortably hike 15km with a daypack on uneven ground, you're fine for either. Operators screen for you, and they'll honestly tell you if your fitness is short.
What if it rains during the cave expedition?
Light rain doesn't stop anything, the trek and the cave continue as planned. Heavy rain after a tropical depression can cause Oxalis or Jungle Boss to postpone or reroute, especially for Hang En which uses river entries. Both operators reschedule or refund cancelled departures, and they call it 24 to 48 hours out. Build a buffer night at each end of your trip if you're tight on dates.
