Self-guided Phong Nha (no tour needed): 7 KM Tour inside Paradise Cave

Do it yourself

Self-guided Phong Nha (no tour needed)

You don't need a tour for a big chunk of Phong Nha. The main caves are pay-at-the-gate, and a motorbike opens up the valley, the springs and the loops. Here's everything you can do independently, and roughly what it costs.

Common questions

Can you visit Phong Nha without a tour?

Yes, for a lot of it. Paradise Cave, Phong Nha Cave and Dark Cave are all self-guided, pay at the gate. A motorbike lets you reach the valley, springs and viewpoints on your own. Only the wild expedition caves legally require a guide.

Do you need a guide for the caves?

Not for the tourist caves. You do need a licensed guide for the jungle expedition caves (Son Doong, Hang En, Hang Pygmy and similar), partly because of unexploded ordnance off the trails.

How do you get around self-guided?

Rent a motorbike (about $6 a day) or a bicycle for the valley. The caves are spread 20 to 70km apart, so wheels make a big difference.

Do you need to book the self-guided caves in advance?

No. Paradise Cave, Phong Nha Cave and Dark Cave all sell tickets at the gate and rarely sell out, even in peak season. The only exception is the Phong Nha Cave boat at major Vietnamese holidays (Tet, April 30), when it's worth turning up early.

Is it safe to ride a motorbike around Phong Nha if I'm a beginner?

The valley loop and the road to Phong Nha Cave are easy and quiet. The Paradise Cave road has a few mountain climbs and trucks, and the Ho Chi Minh trail west has long empty stretches with no help if you crash. If you've never ridden, hire a semi-auto and stick to the valley, or take a Easy Rider.
