Common questions
How cheap is Phong Nha?
Very. Cave tickets run $6 to $18, a motorbike is about $6 a day, and a farm lunch is a few dollars. You can have a full, great day for under thirty dollars, not counting the big expeditions.
What are the cheapest things to do?
The self-guided caves, the Bong Lai valley loop by bike, Mooc Spring, and just riding the countryside. The motorbike loops are close to free once you've rented the bike.
What's the cheapest way to pay for tours in Phong Nha?
Cash in Vietnamese dong is king. ATMs in town accept foreign cards but charge 50,000 to 80,000 VND per withdrawal, so pull out a few days at once. Bigger operators take card or bank transfer for tour balances. USD is widely accepted but you'll lose 3 to 5 percent on the rate.
Are there any free things to do in Phong Nha?
The Bong Lai valley loop, the Son River boat dock at sunset, the Tam Co Memorial, walking the rice paddies behind town and the Botanic Garden's outer trails are all free or near-free. Just bring water and a bike.
