Different things. Phong Nha is about caves and jungle adventure. Ninh Binh is about rice fields, river boats and viewpoints over karst peaks. Most travelers do both on the same trip.

Yes, especially in peak season. There's typically one or two departures a night and they sell out 1 to 2 days ahead. Book through your hostel or on 12Go, walk-on is risky.
Is there a daytime option from Phong Nha to Ninh Binh?
Not direct. You'd take a morning taxi to Dong Hoi, then a daytime train north, getting you into Ninh Binh by evening. Most people just take the overnight to save the day for sightseeing.
Can you do Phong Nha to Ninh Binh in a single day with stops?
Only by private car, which runs around $250 to $300 (prices checked June 2026) and takes 9 to 10 hours. Worth it if you want to break at Pu Luong or Cuc Phuong on the way, otherwise stick to the sleeper bus.
