On arrival in Hue

Most travelers spend two nights in Hue for the Imperial City, royal tombs and a Perfume River sunset before heading south to Da Nang and Hoi An.

Common questions

How long is Phong Nha to Hue?

About 4 to 4.5 hours direct by bus or car, or a full day if you stop at the DMZ war sites en route. The train option needs a transfer to Dong Hoi first.

Is the DMZ tour worth doing between Phong Nha and Hue?

If you have any interest in the Vietnam War, yes. The Vinh Moc Tunnels and Khe Sanh sit roughly on the route, and a private car with a guide turns a transit day into a proper day. Around $150 per car.

What time should you leave Phong Nha for Hue?

Morning buses leave Son Trach between 7am and 9am and have you in Hue by early afternoon, perfect for a sunset walk along the Perfume River. If you're doing the DMZ stop, leave by 7am to fit everything in before dark.

Can you book the Hue bus from your Phong Nha hostel?

Yes, every farmstay and hostel in Son Trach sells the morning bus ticket, usually at the same price as 12Go. They'll arrange a pickup from your accommodation, which beats hauling your bag to the bus office.

Do Phong Nha to Hue tours pick up from Bong Lai valley farmstays?

Most do, if you're at one of the bigger places like Phong Nha Farmstay or Pepper House. Confirm the day before, since the valley is 10km from town and drivers won't detour without warning.
